At Foundations of Speech, we offer comprehensive speech and language evaluations and play-based therapy services for children of all ages and abilities. We are a private pay practice located in the heart of Virginia’s Northern Neck, proudly serving families across the region. Whether your child is just beginning to communicate or needs support with more advanced language skills, we’re here to help.

All new families start with a comprehensive initial evaluation. Evaluations are typically 60 minutes and take place in our welcoming clinic space. During this time, you can expect a thoughtful and thorough process that helps us get to know your child and their unique strengths and needs.

Evaluations may include:

•  A parent interview to discuss your concerns and your child’s developmental history
• A review of relevant medical, developmental, and educational information
• Play-based observation and interaction
• An oral mechanism exam (to assess strength and coordination of oral structures)
• Standardized and/or criterion-referenced assessments
• Informal assessments and dynamic interaction
• A discussion of our findings, clinical impressions, and initial recommendations
• A proposed plan of care (POC) and goal areas for therapy

You’ll receive a detailed written report outlining results, recommendations, and proposed goals. This report will be reviewed with you during your child’s first treatment session.

We offer 30-minute and 60-minute therapy sessions, tailored to meet the needs of each child and family. Sessions are primarily play-based and child-led, with the goal of making communication fun, motivating, and meaningful. It’s rare to see a child sitting at a table during our sessions—we get on the floor, move around, and engage in play that supports connection and communication.

Parents are always welcome to participate in sessions, observe quietly, or wait comfortably in our space. At the end of each session, we take a few minutes to review your child’s progress, discuss strategies to support communication at home, and share ideas for practice in everyday routines.

Our approach is neurodiversity-affirming, strengths-based, and deeply respectful of each child’s unique communication journey. We believe that regulation comes before expectation, so we always ensure your child feels safe, happy, and supported before introducing new communication opportunities.

Telehealth sessions are available on a limited basis, when appropriate.
