frequently asked questions

How do I schedule an evaluation?

The first step is to schedule an initial evaluation, which is required before starting therapy. You can schedule by calling 804-480-2775 or emailing madeline@foundationsofspeech.com. Evaluations are conducted in person at our clinic in White Stone, Virginia.

Do you accept insurance?

Foundations of Speech is a private pay practice and does not currently accept insurance. This is something we are actively working on. We do provide superbills upon request, which families can submit to their insurance provider for potential reimbursement. If you have questions about how this process works, we’re happy to help guide you.

How much do sessions cost?

Please contact us directly for our current rates. At the moment, rates are being kept low as we are not accepting insurance. We offer both 30-minute and 60-minute sessions, and we’re happy to discuss which option might be best for your child’s needs.

How do you decide between 30- and 60-minute sessions?

Session length is based on your child’s attention, regulation, and therapy needs. We also take family preferences and appointment availability into consideration. We’ll work together to determine what will best support your child’s progress.

Do you offer telehealth or home visits?

All evaluations are conducted in person at our clinic in White Stone, VA. Telehealth sessions may be available on a case-by-case basis for therapy appointments. At this time, we do not offer home visits.

What can I expect during therapy sessions?

Sessions are play-based and child-led, with structured activities incorporated when appropriate. Our focus is on co-regulation and following your child’s lead to create a comfortable, engaging environment. We typically spend the last few minutes of each session reviewing your child’s progress and offering suggestions for home carryover to support their communication growth between visits.

Do you assign homework?

If appropriate, we may offer simple strategies, activities, or ideas for families to practice at home. These are always tailored to your child’s goals and your family’s daily routines. We aim to keep home practice fun and manageable!

What if my child is shy, non-speaking, or has difficulty engaging?

We meet every child exactly where they are. Our approach emphasizes connection first—we co-regulate with your child by following their lead, respecting their pace, and creating a safe, welcoming space for communication to grow. There’s never any pressure; our goal is to build trust and joy in the process.

Do you collaborate with other professionals (OT, PT, teachers)?

Absolutely! Collaboration is an important part of our approach. With your permission, we are happy to communicate and coordinate with other professionals on your child’s team, including occupational therapists, physical therapists, teachers, and more. Teamwork helps us provide consistent, holistic support.

How long will my child need speech therapy?

Every child is unique, and the length of therapy varies depending on their individual needs and goals. Some children need short-term support, while others benefit from ongoing therapy. After the initial evaluation, we’ll discuss a personalized plan of care and regularly update you on your child’s progress.

Can siblings participate in sessions?

Yes! We love including siblings when appropriate. Siblings can be wonderful peer models and often play a big role in supporting communication at home. We’ll discuss this together to make sure everyone is comfortable and sessions remain productive.

What ages do you work with?

We work with children from toddlerhood through young adulthood (typically ages 1–18). Our approach is always tailored to your child’s developmental level and interests.

Where is your clinic located?

Foundations of Speech is located inside Allure Art Center at 419 Rappahannock Drive in White Stone, Virginia. We are proud to serve families from all over the Northern Neck.

What should I bring to my child’s first appointment?

Please bring any previous reports (speech, occupational therapy, physical therapy, etc.), your child’s medical history, and anything your child might need to feel comfortable (a favorite toy, snack, etc.). We’ll send you an intake form before your appointment to make sure we have everything we need to get started!
